Comments: Edna Philiba (née Specht) was married to Gilbert Claude Philiba—born to Robert Philiba and Coralie Lazar, Ile-de-France, Paris, France, on November 7, 1923. In 1935, he was living with his uncle or aunt (names unknown) in Valley Stream, Hempstead Town, Nassau, New York State, recorded in the 1940 census. Both Edna and Gilbert had previous marriages, and I know Edna through my relationship with Keith Small, son of Edna and her previous husband John Small, of the Smalls of Maine. If you know of any connection of Gilbert Claude Philiba with other Philibas or Filibas, we would be pleased to know.

Name: Karen Philiba Parsons
Comments: Somehow, along the way, some Filibas were renamed Philiba and were from Spain then to Turkey then France and now USA. We were the only Philibas in the United States starting with my grandmother and my father in the 1930s. We then, recently, found out about the different spelling and are no longer alone.
Name: Lusio Filiba
Comments: There are several potential origins of the surname/last name Filiba. It is predominantly a Jewish name. One account of the origin of the name is its use in Spanish during the times of the Spanish inquisition. The word was "Filibustero" which means privateer or pirate. The story goes that Jews who were wrongfully persecuted and exiled from Spain became privateers that took vengeance on the Spanish crown and Armada by attacking their sailing vessels and their name then became Filiba. Another potential origin of the name is when the Jews were expelled from Spain during the inquisition and they traversed the Balkans on their way to the Ottoman Empire. In Bulgaria which is thought to be a location these Jews traveled through, it is believed that one town that they settled in is today called Plovdiv but its former name was Filiba.
